Internship Programs

Who is eligible for the Intern Program?

An intern is an employed teacher who has applied for and been granted an Internship Credential. Requirements for an Internship Credential include:

  1. Having a teaching position in a school district with which SF State has an Internship partnership. SF State currently has partnership agreements with the following districts: San Francisco Unified School District, Oakland Unified School District, San Mateo County school districts, and some Marin school districts.
  2. Being enrolled in a credential program.
  3. Meeting the U.S. Constitution requirement.
  4. Completing the 120-hour pre-service preparation requirement.
  5. You must pass CBEST and CSET to be hired as an Intern in a school district.

Who is eligible for the Intern Program?

Applicants must be the "teacher of record", teaching in their own classroom and not a substitute or paraprofessional.

If you are:

  1. a Single Subject applicant, you must be teaching at least two courses in your area of subject matter competency. You cannot teach any course outside your proven subject matter area. School must be located within a twenty mile radius of San Francisco.
  2. a Multiple Subject applicant, you must be teaching in a self-contained classroom.

The district won't hire me if I am not in a credential program, but the credential program won't admit me until I have an employment contract! What can I do?

The Intern Program staff works closely with applicants and school districts to facilitate enrollment.

Will the Intern Program help me find me a teaching job?

The Intern Program does not place anyone in a teaching position. The Intern Program staff helps teachers who are already employed, or about to be employed, apply to either the multiple or the single subject credential program and apply for an Internship Credential.

What is the deadline to apply to the Intern Program?

The deadline for the Multiple & Single Subject Intern Programs is:

  • Please contact your department

Should either of these dates fall on a weekend or holiday, the credential program application will be accepted the next business day.

How long does it take to complete the Intern Program?

The program is usually four semesters long and depends on when Interns enter the program and upon availability of courses. Interns attend classes in the evening and fulfill student teaching requirements in their own classrooms.

How much does the program cost?

See the Bursar's Website for fees. Semesters can be full- or part-time depending of course availability and unit count of class.
